Hi, my name is Lauren Newman and I am the middle school library media specialist in the middle school at Northern Burlington. I was born and raised in East Brunswick, NJ. Later, I attended The College of New Jersey where I did my student teaching in Johannesburg, South Africa through a teach abroad program. I then graduated with my BA in English Education in 2003. I went on to teach English/language arts and social studies/history at Timberlane Middle School in Pennington, NJ. After a few years, I decided to go back to school to obtain my Masters of Library and Information Science, which I earned in 2008 from Rutgers University.
I joined the Northern team as the middle school media specialist in 2008, a position I still hold. In addition to my current position, I am a Facilitator of Instructional Technology. My classroom is all over the place! If you walk into the media center, you will probably see students using desktops or Chromebooks, researching using print or electronic resources, reading books or magazines, building something in the makerspace, or completing PE packets if they are injured and cannot participate in PE class. My room vacillates from quiet to noisy and calm to (organized) chaos. My duties and schedule change from day to day, and I love the opportunities that allows. You may find me in the media center or in someone else’s classroom. We do a lot of work on evaluating sources, spotting fake news, and giving credit for sources in proper MLA format. I also built and maintain the middle school media center website. Check it out at:https://www.newmanslibrary.com/
In my free time, I like to write. In 2017, I had three nonfiction middle school-age books published. I also love to travel to see family. My sister lives in California and my parents live in Florida, so we visit those locations often. At home, I love chasing around my son, James. He will be two in July and is a completely lovable goofball. My husband and I enjoy taking James for bike rides and to the library (of course!) and having Sunday dinners over at Gigi and Pop-pop’s.
